Looking Ahead: Applying a Developmental Framework to Understanding Aggressive Behaviors
One of the most researched areas of problem behaviors in children concerns the development of aggressive behaviors.
Aggressive behaviors can be a threat to the safety of others, therefore it is important to know what is "normal" child behavior and what can signal cause for alarm.
Research has demonstrated that "early starters" (Aguilar, Sroufe, Egeland & Carlson, 2000), or those who demonstrate an increasing pattern of aggression in the first 3 years of life, are at greatest risk for continuing to evidence a stable and escalating pattern of aggressive behavior patterns throughout their life span.
Therefore, the concept of aggressive behaviors provides an excellent starting point for looking at how problem behaviors are conceptualized and what con- stitutes behaviors that cross the line into the area of clinically significant variations from normal patterns.
